Description: Ever pass someone on the street and wonder, "What's their story?" As humans, we're curious. We crave the backstory and what happens behind the scenes. You've probably been told not to talk to strangers, right? Not in this camp! This camp gives you permission to go up to someone as a student working on a project (with plenty of adult supervision of course). There are people with rich stories on the streets, and we're going to find them. We'll break out our audio recorders to create a podcast-style vox pop interview and we'll capture photographs and stories of those we find most intriguing using a Humans of New York interview style. On the final day of camp, we'll have a culminating presentation of our work. This camp will engage your curiosity, exercise your bravery, and increase your connection to others. We discover new things about ourselves when we engage with the world. You'll get to tell someone's story through your own words. Past interviewees have included a millionaire’s assistant, a fisherman, a psychic, a hula dancer, a musician who played with Bob Marley and the Wailers. Who will we discover this summer? Join Telling Room teacher Sonya Tomlinson on this Old Port adventure.
About Unwritten Roads: Unwritten Roads is a mobile, multi-genre creative workshop for young adults in Maine. It was founded in 2015 by Katherine Nicoll and Laura Cowie, two Maine Teaching Artists specializing in creative writing and filmmaking. The program serves students grades K - 12 through in school residencies, afterschool programming, digital classes and summer and vacation camps throughout the State of Maine. Unwritten Roads gives youth a chance to express themselves creatively through film and become strong storytellers while given guided support in a safe space. Unwritten Roads offers programs at many diverse clubs and schools, but the mission is always the same: student-driven learning that encourages creative expression. Unwritten Roads is proud to be a mobile program. The program has a wide range of filmmaking and creative writing courses to keep kids’ minds active and expressive.
About The Telling Room: The Telling Room empowers youth through writing and shares their voices with the world. As a literary arts education organization focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, The Telling Room seeks to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students, believing that the power of creative expression can change communities and prepare youth for success both now and in the future.
