Writing, like all art, requires trust. Trying out a new genre, then sharing your writing with people you don’t know at a distance, is an endeavor which demands a great deal of courage. These writers met this challenge, along with those inherent in piloting a new program, with impressive grace, along the way forging new connections with other creative writers from all different backgrounds and locales. Through games, writing prompts, discussions, and exercises designed to stretch their writing skills, SWARM! participants took on matters of the moment from the COVID-19 pandemic to social justice issues like the Black Lives Matter movement. They wrote about the challenges of maintaining friendships during a time of social distancing, the day-to-day realities of online learning, and finding comfort in the lands and waters of Maine. They dug into the world around them, examining these issues through the lens of their own lived experiences. Here in these pages we have the chance to find out, in their own words, what is in the hearts and minds of Maine’s youth.
