"Theseus on the Playground" by Len Harrison

One day you won’t

be able to ignore me; you won’t

be able to trip me; you won’t

be able to point your fingers and laugh.

I am half the blood of gods; I’ll push your fists away effortlessly.

You won’t lay a hand on me, and I’ll be a grown man, my own man.

You’ll find my name in all the stories; it will follow you everywhere.

My adventures will overshadow your meager little lives,

as I live the life I’m destined to live,

as I live the life I dream of from these woodchips.

No shore will be untouched by the soles of my feet; no sight

will go unseen by my eyes. I will conquer

all those who dare question me;

all those who dare underestimate me.

I will step into the palace as a hero, as king,

and I will have you banished from my kingdom.

You won’t be able to ignore me;

I will have your head mounted on my wall.
