"Patterns: An Abecedarian" by Lucie Hollon (Lincoln County)

At a camp in Union, Maine,
Behind the cream-colored canvas tents a
Circle of campers exchange candy-stripes and vees,
Dangling their legs from off a stump. They are
Enveloped in stories
From home. Soon
Gusts of autumn wind will
Huff over the solemn peace of wood as fall awaits
Icy winter.
Jagged flakes of snow clumsily clutter together, cascading from a
Kaleidoscope sky, birds
Lazily drift with the clouds, littering the ground with
Mottled spots of shade.
No person dares venture here in the
Ongoing storms of spring,
Pretty little flowers squashed by violent droplets of water,
Queer and peculiar creatures
Rustling about until
Summer arrives and
The golden rays emerge from
Under frost and
Vicious rain
Which wets the grass and
X-es through the ice, allowing the
Yellow and vibrant summer to
Zip back into the lake, awaiting campers once more.

Lucie Hollon wrote her poem, “Patterns”, as a 7th grader at Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb, Maine. The poem describes what Lucie imagined one beloved place might look like throughout the year. In her free time, Lucie studies dance and voice, and participates in musicals through the Boothbay Y-Arts program. She also performs with the traveling Jr. Theater Festival team from Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
