"Can you hear it in the silence?" by Abby Burgess (Piscataquis County)
Two lovers sit and stare, not a word spoken.
The small city apartment, starting to get smaller and smaller.
No sound is made but the conversation continues.
How, you may wonder?
Their eyes.
They stare into each other's eyes,
both begging for different things.
One for love, hoping the other will stay.
That the love they hold so deeply.
will be enough.
Hearts beating fast in their chests, so painfully.
They wonder if the other can hear.
They can.
They can hear the fast heartbeat.
See the love in their lover's eyes,
A look that has slowly faded in their own.
They too are begging.
Begging, pleading, to be set free from the chains of love.
Chains they created themselves all those years ago.
Chains that have been slowly rusted over the past few months.
Knowing that it's time for this relationship to end,
Two lovers sit and stare, not a word spoken.
