Now Hiring: Telling Room Ambassadors
The Telling Room Ambassadors are alumni who work as temporary part-time employees to extend our writers' impact in the community. In addition to speaking at events of all types as organization representatives, the group advises on Telling Room strategy and may play key roles in programming, publications, and development. Ambassadors have three retreats per year, monthly meetings, and participate in a range of organization activities.
Roles and Responsibilities (have included)
If located in Maine:
Reading your work at events
Assisting teaching artists in Telling Room programs
Collaborating with schools as presenters and mentors
Hosting our annual spring fundraiser
Presenting at conferences
Assisting in planning and attending Telling Room events
Plan and lead bi-annual alumni events
Advising on organizational policies
Creative visioning for publishing projects, partnerships, and program development
Participation on hiring committees
Serving on Telling Room board and committees
Participating in philanthropy and development efforts
If located out-of-state:
Hosting Telling Room online events
Advising on organizational policies
Creative visioning for publishing projects, partnerships, and program development
Participation on hiring committees
Serving on Telling Room board and committees
Participating in philanthropy and development efforts
Expectations and Requirements
Flexible availability for virtual meetings or in-person meetings
Excellent communication skills
Must have participated in past Telling Room programs
Possess an interest in the literary arts, youth advocacy, and nonprofit management
At least 18 years old (no longer a high school student)
Pass a background check to ensure applicants can work around youth
Must have Maine residency (can be in college out of state)
2026 Meeting Dates: Ambassadors meet remotely for an hour once a month, as well as one in-person commitment: a training in August at The Telling Room.
Benefits and Compensation
Telling Room Ambassadors are paid $16.75 per hour, and are FLSA status: non-exempt.
Mileage reimbursement at the federal rate when travel is necessary
Hours
Hours are flexible and project-based. Ambassadors work an average of 2 to 4 hours a month.
Commitment is June 2026 through June 2027. The ideal candidate is available for our Big Night event from 4-8pm on June 18th, 2026 in Portland.
